Artist-in-Residence 2000-2001 Part1

Dorothy Feibleman

Being offered the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Seto Residency program has made it possible to work in the same studio as Norio Mizuno who is local to Seto and Curtis Benzle, from the U.S., who I have known for about 20 years but never worked alongside.
This was a unique experience and it will be interesting to see if it
will have an effect on our work. It was very enjoyable being with
them both.

The people in Seto, the Staff and those associated with the Center have been extremely kind, tolerant and helpful in trying to make our work here run smoothly.

The residency also enabled me to become acquainted with local materials such as "New Bone" china clay from Maruishi Ceramic Materials company. At present, I am writing a book about Colour in Clay in Contemporary Japanese Ceramics
I have already made many structure and chemical analysis tests of many clays (including New Bone) used by ceramists here and other countries.

This has been the first chance to mix foreign clays and Japanese clays for an extended period of time so as to be able to assess the differences in the workability of clays from around the world,
compare them and use them together. Working alongside Norio
and using some other local materials has furthered my
understanding of Japanese nerikomi.
